'IITians for ITIs' is initiated by a group of IIT alumni to drive sustainable excellence in the technical/vocational training in India by creating institutions similar to the IITs but focused on vocational education and highly skilled workers, thereby creating excellence model for 5000 it is across India to emulate. The ContextShortage of highly skilled technicians is an obstacle for India's growing manufacturing sector to become globally competitive. ITIs (Industrial Training Institutes) have the funding and mandate to train the technicians, but their quality of training still remains rather uneven and the linkage with the industry remains weak. ITIs need to institutionalize quality to produce a stream of highly skilled technicians with world class training. The PropositionIn this nation-wide volunteer driven program of long-term scope, partnering with the ITIs and Industry, IITians will help develop curricula and conduct ongoing demand analysis. IITians will mentor and support the principal and the faculty members, staff and trainers to promote excellence. They will also facilitate resource availability to all partner ITIs. At each partner ITI, the program will improve the earning potential of graduating students, overall placement rate and quality of placement. It will also impart the institute with recognition as a premier institute. With each partner industry, the program will lead to a growth in the number of students recruited per year. With clear and measurable benefits for all stakeholders and players, the program will also lead to better morale and motivation to excel. The program governance will be bound by a code of conduct, and will be administered through a program president in India and USA, PanIIT secretariat and ultimately by PanIIT India Executive council. Sustainability, Scalability & ImpactIn long term, the program will institutionalize the process of driving excellence by establishing not-for-profit and self-sustaining accreditation and certification institutes in India for technical/ vocational training of global recognition and reputation. Through its growth phase, the program will establish an adaptive ecosystem for technical skills development integrating the all stakeholders. The program will also improve the Knowledge infrastructure and content in quality, quantity, and reach. These teams will be facilitated by an alumni outreach team, liaison teams for industry and government, a finance team and an accounts team.
