Jatiyo Kristiyo Prochar Samity (JKPS) from its very inception in 1976 has had as its core Vision & Goal the desire of being a catalyst of transformation in West Bengal and in the regions beyond. Registered under the Societies Act 1961: S/18841 of 1976- 77, JKPS as a non profit NGO has strived to bring holistic development into many of the neediest areas of West Bengal and other states in India.
The following are a few of our key focus areas:
Woman and Child development: Over the years JKPS has had the honour of helping to shape the lives of 1000’s of children and their families in West Bengal through a Sponsor A Child program. This program caters to the overall development of a child. All of a child’s needs are met right in the context of where he or she lives. JKPS is also working with over 7500 children through 89 centers in various regions of West Bengal as of today. These centers seek to help these needy children realize their dreams.
Apart from the assistance that is provided to children one of key desires of JKPS has been to assist women in needy areas to strive to become self-supporting. This is done though the establishment of self-help groups, providing small loans as well as skill training.
Medical health and community development:Another integral facet of the work that JKPS is involved in is to take the best of facilities to the most underprivileged. Over the years JKPS has been able to conduct numerous medical camps as well as adult literacy centers all over West Bengal. JKPS does all it can to build into communities with the hope that there will be overall development & transformation.JKPS has also been involved in awareness programs that have helped needy families recognize their rights & privileges.
Disaster relief: JKPS has an excellent track record of being a body been helped assist various communities that have been affected by natural disasters and calamities
- After Care: Most recently, JKPS has turned to the rehabilitation of girls in need of care and protection through their licensed aftercare home, Mahima JKPS Aftercare Home. Mahima Home is licensed under the Department of Women and Children through the Juvenile Justice Act. The home received its first seven residents on 31 April, 2010 and has provided care to 25 children in the last year. The maximum capacity of the home is 20 residents with 22 full time staff, making it the smallest long term care facility in the city with the most concentrated and specialized care.
Mahima girls attend school regularly, and 4 of the girls are preparing for the NIOS exam this year. The social workers provide client focused one-on-one counselling to the girls every other week and lead group therapy sessions each week. The girls are taught basic life skills as well as other personal management techniques such as anger management and relaxation techniques.
Our Mission is to provide excellent aftercare to minor victims of sex trafficking and other girls in need of care and protection in order to facilitate their rehabilitation and successful reintegration into society and to empower them to be exceptional contributors to society and motivated advocates for the eradication of trafficking and violence against women.
