IITians for ITIs, a PanIIT Alumni India-supported initiative, has been initiated by a group of IIT alumni to drive sustainable excellence in the technical/vocational training in India by creating institutions similar to the IITs but focused on vocational education and highly-skilled workers.

The Purpose

Shortage of highly skilled technicians is an obstacle for India’s growing manufacturing sector to become globally competitive. Though there are more than 5,000 Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) that have the funding and mandate to train the technicians and churns out over 7,00,000 technicians each year, the quality of training at the ITIs is a lot to be desired and the linkage with the industry remains poor. ITIs need to institutionalize quality to produce a stream of highly skilled technicians with world class training. Thus ITians for ITIs, a nation-wide volunteer-driven supported by a wide network of IITians, has been envisioned with the following objectives:

  • To develop world class ITIs.
  • Reaching out to 100s of ITIs nationwide.
  • In the long run, the program want to set up its own ITI to showcase what an ITI should be, besides collaborating with IL&FS or similar bodies to help build capability in the skill training and development centers to roll out high quality performers.
  • With each partner industry, the program will lead to a growth in the number of students recruited per year.
  • With clear and measurable benefits for all stakeholders and players, the program will lead to better morale and motivation to excel.
  • In long term, the program will institutionalize the process of driving excellence by establishing not-for-profit and self-sustaining accreditation and certification institutes in India for technical/ vocational training of global recognition and reputation.
  • Establishing an adaptive ecosystem for technical skills development that integrates all stakeholders.

Assisting ITIs

The program has been envisaged to support the ITIs in:

  • Developing curricula and conducting ongoing demand analysis.
  • Introduction of new courses in response to industry needs.
  • Imparting technical guidance.
  • Enhancing the quality of faculty.
  • Mentoring and supporting the principal and the faculty members, staff and trainers to promote excellence.
  • Facilitating resource availability to all partner ITIs.
  • Improving state-of-the-art equipment and teaching aides.
  • Facilitating close interaction with the industry.
  • Improving the earning potential of graduating students, overall placement rate and the quality of placement.
  • Imparting the institute with recognition as a premier institute.
