The Indo US Collaboration for Engineering Education (IUCEE) program, a PanIIT Alumni India initiative, was conceived to improve the quality and global relevance of engineering research and education in India by imbibing the best global practices from the US.
IUCEE was founded in 2007 by over 150 leaders from University of Massachusetts Lowell (UML) with the help of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), Pan IIT, International Federation for Engineering Education Societies (IFEES) and Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE).
Aims and Objectives
A large number of Indian engineering graduates migrate to the US and make valuable contributions to the US research enterprise and to the US economy. Several of these engineers have become entrepreneurs and have played a major role in the IT revolution and in a variety of non-technology oriented industries. Many of them are also leaders in engineering education in the US. This synergy between US and India provides an opportunity for the two countries to collaborate on building the next generation technical workforce using new paradigms.
The aim of IUCEE is to build a solid foundation for engineering education and research by augmenting the four pillars of education:
- Learner-centric teaching.
- Research excellence.
- Outcomes based quality supported by accreditation.
- Innovation and entrepreneurship.
IUCEE’s objective is to increase the number of engineering faculty in the US and in India who collaborate on research and teaching and who will be able to better prepare engineers for the global economy. The long-term objective is to make engineering education and research more relevant to the needs of the global society and to the aptitudes and aspirations of new generations of youth. Partnerships have been forged with various Government agencies which are already engaged in similar efforts in order to leverage available resources and expertise.
About Regional Centers and Workshops
Fifteen IUCEE Regional Centers have been set up all over India and significant positive outcomes have been demonstrated with over 200 colleges all over India. During 2008 and 2009, over 36 professors from the US and 10 industry experts had conducted 46 workshops with 1,165 faculty members. The Indian faculty participants had conducted more than 200 regional workshops with more than 6,000 other faculty members. During 2010, 22 colleges hosted 37 workshops by 28 US experts and five industry experts for over 1,000 Indian faculty members. And during 2011, 37 Indian colleges became members of the 2011 IUCEE College Consortium and 42 one-week workshops were conducted across India.
