Parikrma
Parikrma aims to transform lives of under-served children in one generation by following a 360° support to child – providing Nutrition, Family care & healthcare in addition to Education. Thus, it takes care of a child from street all the way to the job-street, making the urban poor compete on Equal terms in the society.
The Context
Of the million schools in India, over 90% are government or government aided schools. These schools are plagued with well known issues of outdated curriculum, unaccountable teachers (25% of whom do not attend school) and archaic teaching methods. Thus over 70% of children drop out by grade VIII and the schools experience low pass percentages. These schools have vernacular language of instruction leading to poor grounding when higher learning is in English only. Thus, the poor cannot compete on equal terms with others.
The Proposition
Parikrma provides an innovative, comprehensive solution that aims to help the under-served urban kids break povery cycles and thus transforming their communities. The salient features of the Parikrma model are:
Parikrma humanity foundation has over the last 4 years set up four centres of learning reaching out to 800 children from 26 slums from kg to X with 50% girl children.The results:
Alumni Networking
Over the years, PanIIT movement has developed and consolidated itself in many ways. It has now fully functional chapters in India, US, EU, Canada, Australia, Japan, Singapore. It has organized a number of events to permit alumni networking:
- 97% attendance with 1% drop out rate
- Establishing Educational excellence with Parikrma receiving the ICSE board award for Education excellence
In addition to centres of learning, Parikrma works with government schools to apply their best practices and gives leadership training to teachers, administrators and other Education NGOs.
Sustainability, Scalability & Impact
Parikrma is exploring government funding to cover all costs for expansion in to government schools.
It is a role model NGO for quality end to end Education for the under-served. Hence, scale is through ideological emulation, not only physical replication. Parikrma seeks to be a nodal excellence centre & trainer for best practices in 360° approach to education of the under-privileged.
Future steps
Over the next two years, Parikrma is setting up a hub centre that will consist of a junior college and
training institute to proliferate its best practices. It also seeks to expand parikrma to the four metros and eventually to other towns.
