IIT - Roorkee

IIT Roorkee is the most recent of the seven IITs but it has a legacy that goes back to 1847- a formidable history of more than 155 years. The majestic structure of the campus puts numerous historic monuments to shame, and its location in the verdant valleys of the Himalayas makes it the ideal spot for a writer’s inspiration. Yet, what it is really known for are the brilliant technical minds it has nurtured over a period of time.

Glorious Past - Excellent Future

IIT Roorkee was established as Roorkee college in 1847 as the First Engineering College in the British Empire. The College was renamed as Thomason College of Civil Engineering in 1854. In November 1949 the status of erstwhile college was elevated to the First Engineering University of Independent India. The Institute celebrated its 150th anniversary in October 1996.

On September 21, 2001, University of Roorkee was declared as the nation’s seventh Indian Institute of Technology. The institute is a member of LAOTSE, an international network of leading universities of Europe and Asia exchanging students and senior scholars. Reputed faculty, a vibrant student community, excellent technical and support staff and an effective administration aided by good infrastructure have all contributed to the present international standing of the university.

Campus of IIT Roorkee has a lush green ambience. It is located at the foot hills of the Himalayan ranges and is surrounded by places of tourist interest like Mussoorie, Rishikesh and Haridwar. The Ganga canal runs adjacent to campus before vanishing into plains of UP.

There is a strong emphasis on total personality development of students. IIT-R provides many different co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. Students are expected to acquire proficiency in their chosen activity and earn credits which are included in their over all academic grade. The campus has 8 hostels, of which one (Sarojini) is exclusively occupied by girls and one (Rajendra) is exclusively occupied by freshers. In addition, to these hostels, there are 4 hostels for married students and research scholars, foreign students.

Academic Programme

IIT Roorkee offers an array of Undergraduate, Post graduate and Doctoral programmers. You can acquire a Btech, Mtech, Msc and Phd degree here. Besides these, one can also get an MBA and an MCA degree. A total of 10 engineering courses are offered for the undergraduate programme.

The array of specializations further widens for the Postgraduate programmes at IIT Roorkee. The number of seats for Civil Engineering is the highest at this level too. IIT Roorkee offers some unique courses at the postgraduate level, which are not available anywhere else in the country.

The Faculty

With 340 members, the faculty at IIT Roorkee is a blend of senior members richly experienced and eminent in their field and younger members who have already made a mark in their areas of research. Members of the faculty have been honoured with numerous awards including Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.
