IIT - Madras
It’s the only place in India (Gosh… may be the world) where the mountains move and the rivers remain still.

IIT Madras was the third among the seven IITs to be established by the Government of India. The first Indo-German agreement in Bonn, West Germany for the establishment of the Indian Institute of Technology at Madras was signed in 1959. The Institute was formally inaugurated in 1959 by Prof. Humayun Kabir, Union Minister for Scientific Research and Cultural Affaires.
IIT Madras is a residential institute located in city of Chennai. Campus was formerly a part of Guindy National Park. Most of the campus is protected forest, and has a large population of chital (spotted deer), black buck and monkeys. The entrance to the campus displays the logo (a stylized lamp) and the motto “SIddhirbhavati Karmaja” (taken from the Bhagavad Gita, meaning “It is inherent to human nature that success comes through hard work”). The Gajendra Circle is a major landmark at the centre of the campus. The campus has 17 hostels, of which two are exclusively for girls. There are two major central dining facilities for the students – Himalaya and Vindhya.
The institute has nearly 100 laboratories. All Sponsored Research and Consultancy activities in the Institute are coordinated by the Centre for Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research (IC & SR).
Some of major recent initiatives at the Institute include three new Departments (Bio Technology, Engineering Design and Management Studies), 5 – Year integrated programme in Humanities, IIT Madras Research Park and Inter-Disciplinary Research Projects.
The rigors of academic study at each level are balanced with a number of other related activities which include co-curricular activities. Saarang is the cultural festival of IIT Madras. It is held annually in the third week of January. Saarang was known as Mardi Gras from its inception until 1996, when it was renamed to “Saarang”. It hosts around 50,000 students over its give days run. Shaastra is an annual student technical festival and takes its name for the Sanskrit word for science. The Open Air Theater (OAT) is used to screen movies, host rock shows and Carnatic music concerts. OAT is also venue for the weekly Saturday night Film Club movies and other activities. It can seat over 5000 people and usually plays to packed capacity. IIT Madras has colorful slang that’s unique to itself. Even a Masters thesis has been published on the lingo of IIT Madras at a German University.
