Today the institute is recognized as one of the centre of academic excellence in the country, reputed for the outstanding caliber of the students graduating from it.

Academic Programmes

IIT Bombay is a coeducational institute with a student strength of about 5000 and faculty strength of about 400. There are almost an equal number of undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Academic ProgrammesThe programmers and courses offered have a flexibility to evolve and change in response to new requirements. Courses are continuously updated and new electives added to suit recent development.

Admission to IIT Bombay is offered to those qualifying through its various entrance examination. The JEE, for undergraduate programme GATE, CEED, JMET, BIOMEET for postgraduate programmes.

Annually about 1000 students obtain their degrees from IIT Bombay. Of these approximately 400 students obtain their B tech and M Sc and the remainder obtain MTech, M.Des, Master of Management, M.Phil and Ph.D degrees.

New Initiatives

IIT Bombay continues to introduce new areas in its Academic programmes and innovation in its academic activities. The Kanwal Rekhi School of Information Technology, Shailesh J Mehta School of Management and School of Bio-Sciences and Bio-engineering are initiatives, of the last decade.

An Entrepreneurship Cell has been established to guide students and promote entrepreneurship. SINE, Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, hosted by Indian Institute of technology Bombay is an umbrella for promotion of entrepreneurship at IIT Bombay. SINE administers a business incubator which provides support for technology based entrepreneurship. It extends the role of IIT Bombay by facilitating the conversion of research activity into entrepreneurial ventures.

Research and Development

Research and DevelopmentIIT Bombay has placed considerable emphasis on research and developmental work as key components of its activities. The institute plays a very significant role in diverse facets of R & D in rapidly expanding frontiers of knowledge, national needs and global developments.

Research and development projects are undertaken in the institute in various areas of specialization and fall under three broad categories:

  • Sponsored/Contract research
  • Consultancy projects
  • Sponsored student projects

Student Facilities

Student FacilitiesIIT Bombay has well equipped modern laboratories, one of the finest technology libraries and extensive state-of-the-art computer facilities. Network connectivity is excellent and the entire campus, including student hostels, is connected. Placement of students in the right kind of job environment is an important activity of the Placement Club, which has several international and national companies on its list.

The campus

IIT Bombay CampusIIT Bombay is located at Powai, which is an eastern suburb in the North-eastern part of the metropolitan city, Mumbai, in India. It is a fully residential University, with all students staying on campus. Students stay in 13 halls of residences or hostels, each having it’s own mess facility. Most of the faculty members and other staff also stay on campus, creating a small township in itself. Consciously developed, the campus has retained and increased its green cover, rich in natural flora and fauna. The campus is connected to the city proper, an hour’s distance through buses and local trains.

IIT Bombay CampusThere are excellent recreational facilities for sports including swimming pool, tennis courts, basketball courts etc. Facilities for sports are matched by those for cultural activities, which include film clubs, classical music societies, debating, drama clubs and hobbies club. Other activities include the popular student festivals such as:- Mood indigo – 4 days cultural festival attended by thousands of students from across the country. Techfest – technology festival including exhibition, competitions, workshops and seminars. SPICMACAY – concerts by eminent artists to promote Indian Classical music, dance and other arts.
