The day when the first batch of students pass out from the hallowed precincts of an academic institute is always etched as a red letter day. Rejoicing the memorable achievement of first batch of students graduating from the newly established IIT Bhubaneswar, Pan IIT Alumni Bhubaneswar organized a meet on 5th May, 2012. The PanIIT Meet also included an outreach program for the Pan IIT Alumni Global Conference 2012 at Kolkata.
The Chief Guest of the PanIIT Meet was Minister of Rural Development— Jairam Ramesh. The Minister, an alumnus of IIT-Bombay, noted that it was students who have always brought laurels to the IIT brand. He asked fellow IITians to inculcate values like humility, integrity and tolerance for diversity in them in order to achieve the goal of nation building.
After a presentation by Ramnath S Mani, President IIT KGP Alumni Foundation India, Ramesh specifically complimented the slew of NB initiatives of PanIIT, especially PanIIT Alumni Reach For India and IUCEE. He praised Reach For India for its skill-building gurukuls that impart skill-base training to school dropouts. He mentioned that he had visited a Reach For India gurukul where he witnessed the major impact of the social enterprise that has a mission to enhance incomes of the underprivileged. He stated that the Ministry would be interested in working with Reach for India and could even look at funding it.
Prof Madhu Chakraborty, Director, IIT Bhubaneswar, informed about the challenges faced by the first batch of engineers who passed out of the institute this year. Sandipan Chakravortty, Managing Director Tata Steel Processing & Distribution Limited and also Chairman Pan IIT Global Conference 2012, urged PanIItians to rise above geographical, regional, parochial considerations and be proud of the IIT system. Speaking about Pan IIT Alumni Global Conference 2012, he solicited everyone to register for the event.
The event, attended by over 400 IIT alumni, also had Vishal Dev, Municipal Commissioner of Bhubaneswar and Pronob Guha, Chairman, Marketing Committee Pan IIT 2012.

In order to make more alumni members avail the benefit of its mentorship program, IIT Mentors has unveiled a unique ‘Fund-a-Month’ patrons program— a new initiative that would help this PanIIT initiative sustain itself.
IIT Mentors, which aims at unlocking the network of the IIT alumni for the benefit of the alumni, has invited its well-established alumni network to sponsor the program’s expenses to help run its operation for a month. This monthly sponsorship program will enable the program to meet the salary of a full-time secretariat, besides taking care of telephone and internet costs, event expenses and the shared office space rent. IIT Mentors is looking at monthly sponsorship fund of Rs 75,000 (USD 1,500) that can be paid in part or full through cash, DD or cheque.
While IIT Mentors believes that true mentoring can only be gifted, sustaining and scaling up the program have been impeded by insufficient flow of funds. Explains Rakesh Mishra, Co-Chair, IIT Mentors, “Unlike many other mentoring programs available in the market, there is no revenue source in our program and most of the services provided by us are at pro-bono basis.” The ‘Fund a Month’ helps create sustainable pipeline of interim funding to get the program’s effort going and scale up to touch the lives of many.
Informs Neeraj Gupta, Co-Chair, IIT Mentors, “In recognition of the contribution, we will publish the names and profiles of the sponsors for that particular month on our website, besides mentioning their names in our quarterly newsletter ‘Sampark’. We are also open to offering space on our website for brand display of the company/product f or the whole month if desirable.”

‘Meri Ardhangini’ or ‘My Wife: A Poetic Love Story’ by Pratik Verma (IIT-BHU, 2008) is an anthology of 16 poems in Hindi describing the myriad phases experienced by a passionate lover and his catharsis. Through the series of poems the author narrates a gripping love story, set on the backdrops of Varanasi and Las Vegas.
The book starts when a man comes across the first signs of love. It starts with a happy note as he proposes to the girl and makes her believe that his love is true for her. However, soon the tone turns melancholic as this young lover’s heart is broken. He drowns his grief in alcohol and soon realizes that this nectar is his true life partner. Alcohol, which provides his shattered heart some comfort and balm, also pushes him further into the depths of his girlfriend’s memories. It is then that he learns one of the most important lessons of life— that true love is inside him. He has come alone in this world and also has to depart alone.
The poet Pratik Verma (IIT-BHU, 2008) has worked as a software professional for two years. Verma, who is now pursuing his post-graduate degree (MS) in electrical and mathematics in University of Las Vegas, Nevada, says that the book reflects his journey through love, life and the cities of Varanasi and Las Vegas.

With iconic IITians like Narayana Murthy, Nandan Nilekani and Kris Gopalakrishnan fuelling the spiralling growth story of the state of Karnataka, the state Government has displayed interest in engaging with PanIITians, inviting them to pump in investments in the state. This emerged after Anil Vij, Head, Government Project, PanIIT, met Vandana Gurnani, Resident Commissioner & Secretary to Government, Commerce & Industries Department & Investment Commissioner for Karnataka and Manjunath Gouda, Resident Director, Karnataka Udyog Mitra.
In an official communication to PanIIT, Government of Karnataka has acknowledged the significant contribution made by IITians towards the development of Karnataka. The Government has also welcomed more PanIITians to invest in the progressive and investor-friendly state of Karnataka— which is the first state to bring the industrial facilitation act to investors. The state Government also wants to reach out to the wide network of PanIITians across the globe in its upcoming the 2nd Global Investors Meet 2012 in Bangalore to be held on 7-8 June 2012. Says Anil Vij, “Being ranked as No 1 by the World Bank in the ‘Investment Climate across 16 states’ report, Karnataka provides the right investment opportunity for PanIITians. The state’s single window acts as a one stop shop for investments.”

Giving a fillip to satellite and space technology, India’s first student satellite project is being built at the prestigious IIT Bombay. Aptly named ‘Pratham’, the student initiative is three years into the making.
Pratham is the brainchild of IIT Bombay Student Satellite Project, which has set the target of launching no less than five satellites in the coming years. These satellites could be test-beds for new technology that is being developed in the institute and also a method for space qualification. The fully functional microsatellite will fit in a 30*30*30 cm cube and will weigh less than 15 kg. The pioneering project is being mentored by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) scientists and IIT Bombay faculty. The satellite will eventually be launched by ISRO.
The IIT Bombay Student Satellite Project is aimed at enabling students and faculty to gain knowledge and experience in the field of satellite and space technology and empowering the satellite team with the skills to develop the satellite through various phases of design, analysis, fabrication and testing until the flight model is made. It also aims at launching the satellite into orbit and measuring Total Electron Count of the ionosphere and involving students from other universities in satellite mission by building ground stations in their universities.
